National Aboriginal Council on Species at Risk Coordinator

The National Aboriginal Council on Species at Risk (NACOSAR) was created under the Species at Risk Act to provide advice and recommendations to the Minister of the Environment and the Canadian Endangered Species Conservation Council on the administration of the Act.

As directed by the Council, the NACOSAR Coordinator will be responsible for developing national advocacy strategies regarding the protection of species at risk, as to fairly represent Inuit, Métis, First Nations peoples and non-status Indians.

Responsibilities:

* Builds, develops and maintains networks and relationships with national, regional and community First Nations, Inuit, and Métis leaders, experts, and federal, provincial and territorial government officials, to advance NACOSAR positions;
* Represents NACOSAR in a variety of forums, including promoting the interests of the NACOSAR, enhancing NACOSAR's profile, and improving public awareness;
* Anticipates and responds to information and action requests;
* Develop agendas and supporting documentation for for NACOSAR meetings;
* Development of policy and procedures manual for NACOSAR;
* Produce annual report from NACOSAR to the Minister of the Environment; and
* Review of work undertaken by consultants.

Knowledge, Experience, Skills & Abilities:

* Possesses a keen interest in protecting species at risk and promoting the awareness of species at risk issues;
* Possesses a minimum of 5 years experience in addressing Aboriginal environmental concerns;
* Experience in developing strategic plans, policies and procedures;
* In-depth knowledge of the Species at Risk Act and its application;
* Significant knowledge and understanding of the socio-economic, resource & capacity issues in First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities;
* Must possess strong abilities in organizing informational events;
* Demonstrated superior writing skills;
* Proficiency in computer applications including: Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel;
* Demonstrated experience working with federal, provincial, territorial, northern, urban governments and officials;
* Demonstrated superior interpersonal & negotiation skills, management ability, leadership, teamwork and judgment, diplomacy, tact and decision making ability; and
* Must be available to travel and work irregular hours when required.

Position duration: until March 31, 2009, with possibility of extension.

Position is located in Ottawa, Ontario
