The Alberta Business Awards of Distinction were handed out by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce in March. The awards included two categories recognizing Aboriginal excellence in the business sector. Niwihcihaw Acceptance Ltd. of Hobbema won in the Eagle Feather Business Award category, which recognizes a First Nations-owned business “that demonstrates outstanding achievement in business and has incorporated entrepreneurial and cultural concepts into its operation for long-term success.” Niwihcihaw Acceptance has a mandate to promote positive growth and self-sufficiency by providing First Nation individuals and communities access to reasonable financing services. Their involvement in the Hobbema community includes hosting the annual Aboriginal Day celebrations and helping with Christmas hamper and the annual community Christmas dinner. Carrie Langevin won the Aboriginal Woman Entrepreneur Award for Mother Earth Essentials, an Edmonton business she co-owns with her husband. Savanna Energy Services Corp., of Calgary, was recognized in the Aboriginal Relations – Best Practice category, which is awarded “to a non-Aboriginal business that demonstrates outstanding achievement in Aboriginal relations, including economic development, employment and training, and Aboriginal community support.” The energy services provider offers comprehensive oilfield drilling and services, and is uniquely positioned in its industry as it incorporates Aboriginal partnerships and community involvement with leading technology.
