Boy struck by falling tree near Banff

A 12-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after being struck by a falling tree in Banff National Park.

It happened in Johnston Canyon on Thursday afternoon.
The boy was air lifted by Alpine Helicopters to hospital in Banff, where he was picked up by STARS Air Ambulance around 3:30 p.m. and transferred to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.
The boy was in serious, life-threatening condition when they transported him.

It’s unknown what caused the tree to collapse.

The hiking trail the boy was on at the time has been closed until further notice
 


Artist Christi Belcourt recognized

Christi Belcourt, a Metis artist from Espanola, who has been recognized by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, the Chalmers Family Fund and the Metis Nation of Ontario, was approached by organizers of the Pan-Am Games to design the medals because they felt she could best represent the spirit of the games after seeing her artwork.

The design of the medals was centered around the image of water and how it is WATER that binds us all together as a human species. Belcourt’s art designs have also been showcased by the acclaimed fashion designing House of Valentino, again with the prints being replicated having ties to water.
 


Updated warning labels for over the counter medication

American health regulators are updating the warning labels of popular over-the-counter pain medications and adding information about the risks of heart attack and stroke while using the drugs over a short period of time.

The drugs affected are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) popular drugs that belong to this classification include Advil, Aleeve, Motrin, Naproxen and Celebrex. Although Asprin is considered a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug the revised warning will not be applied.
 


Wildfire evacuees updates

According to the Red Cross there are now 54 communities affected by the northern Saskatchewan wildfires.

The amount of people that are affected is around 8-thousand 8-hundred.

Prince Albert has two shelters with a combined total of 2-hundred and 43 people, Saskatoon with a combined total of 5-hundrred and 68 people, Regina has a combined total of 6-hundred and 16 people, Cold Lake has a total of 5-hundred and 50 people as those that are taking refuge in North Batttleford are primarily staying in hotels.
 


Drug bust in Athabasca

On Thursday July 9th at approximately 1:30 pm members of the Athabasca Integrated Traffic Unit were alerted to a suspicious vehicle and a possibility of drug use. Members quickly located the vehicle on Highway 55 in the town of Athabasca. Suspicion became a reality and both adults in the vehicle were arrested.

Subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the finding of 95.4 grams of crack cocaine, 10 grams of marihuana, $1950 in Canadian Currency and a 762 Semi-automatic Assault rifle complete with laser sight. The drugs have an estimated street value between $8-10,000.

Steven Gladue age 29 of Wabasca is facing charges of Possession for the purpose of trafficking, Possession of a controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and one count of Possession of Property obtained by crime under the Criminal Code. He is set to appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on July 27th.

Kelly Meneen age 22 of Wabasca is facing one count of Possession of a controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. She is set to appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on August 10th.
