Bill 1 passes unanimously

Bill 1, an act to renew democracy in Alberta was unanimously passed by the Alberta legislature yesterday. The primary purpose of the act is to return the accountability of the government to the public as opposed to the deep pockets of corporations and unions.
The bill was made retroactive to the day it was introduced, a strategy utilized to prevent unions and corporations from making donations before it came into effect.
The legislation was introduced June 15.

 


Edmonton Police to use body worn video

Edmonton Police Services has completed a three-year study to assess the effectiveness of body worn video devices.

 

Body worn video has value in providing evidence in criminal investigations, but as found through the study, there are significant challenges that do not make it feasible to implement Body Worn Devices across the entire police service.

Despite the challenges, the findings have led the Edmonton Police Services to proceed with a gradual introduction of the Body Worn Video devices over multiple years to officers involved in high-risk public interactions.

 


RCMP Constable Tyler Cull has been charged with Uttering threats under Section 264.1(1) (a) of the Criminal Code.

 

The charge is the result of an RCMP investigation into an
on-duty incident involving another RCMP employee which took place on June 15, 2015 at Wood Buffalo Detachment.

Cst. Cull is set to appear in Wood Buffalo Provincial Court
on July 29, 2015. He has been suspended pending the outcome of the trial process.

 


Lakeland College has signed an agreement to establish a special purpose fund for awards for Métis students.

 

The agreement was signed on Wednesday morning at the
college, and will establish a fund of $130,000 to provide bursaries and awards to be distributed each year in the form of two to four awards worth between $2,500 and $3,500 to students of Métis heritage.

The Métis Education Foundation provided the funds, which
will help students who have to deal with student loans or have to work part-time jobs in order to cover the cost of their education.

up to code.
