Two years since the southern Alberta floods

It has been two years since flood waters forced almost 1,000 people from their homes and the surrounding communities are still dealing with the aftermath working to rebuild homes, roads and other damaged infrastructure.

On Friday a new partnership involving Siksika, the Alberta Government and the Indian Business Corporation was announced.

This partnership is unique in Alberta in that it’s never happened with a First Nation and a First Nation owned company collaborating with the province to deliver programs, services or economic funding directly to First Nations people.

Jack Royal, chairman of the Indian Business Corporation has been quoted saying, “The initiative will help community members to build independence and will have a positive impact on social conditions within the community.”

The feds withhold funds to needy families

The federal government hasn't provided hundreds of low-income families their full government benefits since at least 2007.

A staff member at Employment and Social Development Canada recently identified a "system anomaly" that has been withholding employment insurance money from about 800 needy families in each of the last eight years.

The money was supposed to be paid as a family supplement to top up EI claimants whose household income, including spousal income, is no higher than $25,921.

The underfunding glitch apparently occurred whenever the Canada Revenue Agency turned over information to the department about changes in the marital status of the claimants.

Medical Marijuana

Tiny sprouts will someday become 18-inch medical marijuana plants.

Aurora Cannabis, Alberta’s first commercial marijuana production facility, has just finished its first harvest at its facility near Cremona.

The federal government is no longer allowing patients to grow their own supply. The only legal way to access medical cannabis is to get it by courier, from licensed commercial operators.
