The Enbridge company has teamed up with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to provide two new initiatives that will directly benefit students.

On Nov. 1, they announced that as part of a quarter million dollar gift to the college, Enbridge is contributing$100,000 to student awards to "attract and support students of Indigenous ancestry from Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut," a NAIT press release stated.

The other initiative is the company's support for the NAIT Compaq Centre for Information and Communications Technology. The $50 million facility will boost ICT student enrollment by 700 full-time students, increasing enrollment in ICT programs to 1,600 plus. It will open next fall.

Enbridge is the only Canadian pipeline operator with far-northern facilities. It also operates the world's longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system and provides natural gas to 1.5 million customers in Ontario, Quebec and New York State.

Company Vice President of Northern Pipeline development Wayne Sartore said that because of their unique position, they have "a corporate commitment to enhance the quality of life in our communities by supporting programs such as technical education.

In appreciation of the its support for NAIT's mandate to improve access to education for northern students, a student lounge on the second floor of the new building is going to be named for Enbridge.
