The Northland School Division has implemented a First Nations, Métis and Inuit action plan through all 24 of its schools. The action plan was developed by the FNMI Working committee and approved at the September board meeting. The committee involved school administrators, Aboriginal language instructors and advisory board members. NSD still does not have a corporate board. “The FNMI action plan is a huge step for us to lead the way in FNMI education in Alberta,” said Delores Pruden Barrie, director of FNMI education. The action plan is designed to respond to local community and school aspirations and strengthen Aboriginal culture and language.” The plan addresses the Aboriginal content direction, identifies success factors, different funding models and three action items: identifying strengths that already exist at NSD; providing recommendations to improve community engagement to promote Aboriginal culture; and enhancing library materials. Ninety-five per cent of NSD’s student population is Aboriginal.
