Northern Lakes College has expanded its dual credit programming to high school students in two more school divisions. A partnership between High Prairie School Division and Living Waters Catholic Regional Division in Slave Lake has now been struck. As of this February, the college will offer a total of five programs as part of its dual credit program: Emergency Medical Responder, Forestry and Harvesting Technician, Health Care Aide, Power Engineering 4th Class and Welding. “We are hoping this program will improve the transition rate from high school to post-secondary. The collaboration with schools also provides a greater range of choice for students in high school. In many cases, the opportunity to take a college course during high school can give a student the motivational boost they need to stay in school and build confidence needed to continue on a post-secondary path,”  said Rick Neidig, president and CEO of Northern Lakes College. Northern Lakes College began offering dual credits to Peace River students in  2010 in partnership with Peace River School Division and Holy Family Catholic Regional Division. Students who are successful in the dual credit program now have an extra incentive to complete high school. Northern Lakes College offers a $500 bursary to dual credit students who, upon graduating from high school, enroll with the college to continue their post-secondary education.
