The Wood Buffalo Métis along with other organizations and businesses held a symposium last week, examining the rights of Metis and economic development.

Kyle Harrietha is the General Manager of the McMurray Métis and says the turnout was amazing and the topics were wide-ranging.

There were talks on the history of the Métis Nation, the duty to consult and accommodate, Métis entrepreneurs, business success stories, as well as presentations by the presidents of the four Métis organizations in Wood Buffalo and a great keynote address by Manitoba Federation President, David Chartrand.

Harrietha says the duty to consult was a discussion that continued throughout both days of the gathering and how important it is for governments to respect this part of the resource development process.

The symposium is something the McMurray Métis are thinking about doing every two years.
