Burt Porter, a single parent with four children, has provided countless hours of volunteer service to the Aboriginal Head Start program in Calgary.
His efforts earned him the National Aboriginal Volunteer Award, which was presented to him at a Canadian National Aboriginal Youth Conference workshop in Edmonton on Oct. 26. Porter is one of only three volunteers nationally who received the award.
Calgary Aboriginal Head Start is a kindergarten as preschool program that teaches youngsters Aboriginal culture and traditions, while it prepares them to attend regular school when they are older.
Porter's own children have all attended the Head Start program, which relies extensively on parental involvement to keep it going.
