Women’s shelters receive additional dollars

September 23, 2015. Women’s shelters in Sucker Creek, Big Stone Cree, Maskwacis, Morley and Standoff First Nations were all recipients of funding dollars from the province. All five shelters hold fee-for-service agreements with the government. The additional funding of $15 million was announced today by Human Services Minister Irfan Sabir and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Shannon Phillips. The money will enhance supports for women and children affected by family violence. This money is on top of $10 million through the Family and Community Safety Program grants which was received by 76 local projects to prevent family and sexual violence and child abuse. Receiving dollars to operate programs targeted to the Aboriginal population were Beaver First Nation, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society (Edmonton), Bigstone Health Commission, Dene Tha’ First Nation, Fort Macleod Kids First Family Centre, Hinton Friendship Centre, Metis Child and Family Services (Edmonton), Opokaa’sin Early Intervention Society (Lethbridge), Peavine Metis Settlement, Sagitawa Friendship Centre, and Samson Cree Nation.
