"Canada's Forests, A Breath of Fresh Air" is the theme of this year's National Forest Week, celebrated across Canada May 6 to 12.

The theme has two interpretations - one referring to the role trees play in cleaning the air, the other to innovations in forest management, protection and renewal.

National Forest Week is an annual event sponsored by the Canadian Forestry Association (CFA) in co-operation with provincial forestry associations, governments, industry, and other environmentally concerned partners. The week has been marked in Canada in one form or another for more than 80 years.

For the past 50 years, a national poster challenge has been part of the CFA's National Forest Week celebrations. Students from across the country are invited to take part in the challenge by creating and submitting a poster illustrating the National Forest Week theme. Entries will be judged in two age categories-junior Grades 4 to 6, and senior grades 7 to 10. Judges will select the winning entries based on creativity, artistic ability, relevance to the theme, and balanced portrayal of the theme. The deadline for poster submissions is May 31.

Saskatchewan students should mail their poster entries to the Saskatchewan Forestry Association, Box 400, Prince Albert, SK S6V 5R7, with their name, grade, school and home address clearly printed on the back of their poster.
