OTTAWA - April 1, 2014

In what many are calling nothing more than a pre-election publicity stunt, Prime Minister Steven Harper has announced that Canada will have a third official language.

And Windspeaker has learned that language will be Cree.

In a conference call with Aboriginal media Harper stated: "Ever since my government announced that it would cease funding Aboriginal language groups and initiatives, there has been mounting criticism for the impact these cuts have had on the preservation of Aboriginal languages in Canada. I'm not insensitive, I've now reconsidered that position...and after some thorough consultations my government has decided to act."

Harper then stated that Cree has been selected as the new third official language of Canada joining French and English.

Harper stated that Cree was selected "because it's the most popular Aboriginal language and the most likely to survive moving forward. It's also really easy to spell for conservatives and liberals alike. and not like some of the other languages which were really complicated."

Windspeaker has been in contact with several government staffers who worked behind the scenes on this policy change and they were willing to share their insight but only on the condition their names would not be used.

Making Cree an official language was a no brainer. Especially since we've decided not to use any of the symbols "you know, the triangles and backward C's and stuff."

Windspeaker has learned that these changes will not be implemented by the government until after the next federal election. This has already prompted many critical comments accusing the Harper Government of nothing more than an election ploy to win over the Aboriginal vote.

UPDATE: Harper Government will require all government employees working on Cree territory will be required to take Cree language lessons. Asked for clarification, a government official said that every public servant will need to know how to point using only their lips.

This is a developing story...

In related news, it is the first day of April.
