The provincial and federal governments have done a poor job in promoting economic development on reserves, said Indian Affairs Minster Ron Irwin. This includes forcing Aboriginal people into unsuccessful ventures, costing both them and the taxpayer money. The fastest way to

improve the lives of Aboriginal people is to remedy these situations, he told a Commons Aboriginal affairs committee. The key to the inherent right to self-government is ending the cycle of social assistance. Without self-sufficiency there cant be self-government. Irwin said governments can't continue giving the same level of social assistance.
