Kids treated to flight from the past

Page 16

Eight children will be the kings of classroom show and tell for months.

While their class-mates can speak of bike rides and visits from distant uncles, these kids will talk about riding on a plane from the distant past.

The opportunity for the children to get airborne on a 60-year-old Lockheed 10A "Electra" was made possible through a special Air Canada program and a generous donation from an international company with main offices in Edmonton.

Emergency room on wheels important commodity

Page 15

There's nothing routine about living life in the fast lane when the bright lights are flashing, the sirens screaming and you're en route to help save a life.

In fact, the only thing that's predictable is the unpredictable when you're working as an EMT (emergency medical technician) on an ambulance run.

Whether it's a scoop and run service or a high tech emergency room on wheels, where the operation is to stabilize a patient, the members of the Onion Lake Ambulance Team have found that no two days are ever alike.

Film-making is the stuff that dreams are made of for most Native kids these days, unless of course, you happen to be living on the Pasqua Reserve in Saskatchewan.

And for community members and some of the lucky youth chosen to play extras in a major television film production of Big Bear, life will never be quite the same. They've spent months on a huge movie set, dressed up in period costume, working in front of cameras with some of the most famous Aboriginal stars in the industry today.

Every year from late April to late October fire crews are assembled all across the Praires, sometimes risking their lives to complete their duties.

The Grade 12 students enrolled in summer courses at the Thunderchild High School went to Sechelt, B.C. to personally witness self government in action.

"We want to do something for the students since they have worked hard and are committed to finishing their classes," said Jerry Okanee, director of education. "We want to encourage them to stay in school and to further their education."
