In some ways, the battle between the Department of Indian Affairs and Manitoba Indian bands is a phony war. The fighting has been fierce and dirty, it's true. What's more, things are soon going to get even worse when several new investigations and a court case begin to unfold. The public skirmishes, however camouflage the real dispute - not to mention the necessary solution.

Saskatchewan Indian College to hold its first annual meeting

REGINA - The end of October will see the beginning of a new annual trend at the Saskatchewsan Indian Federated College (SIFC).

On October 29 and 30, the college will be holding its first annual conference at the Regina Inn. Organizers of the SIFC conference '86 say they're trying to gather Indian education policy makers and personnel in a general assembly "to present and discuss the college's mandate, programs and alternatives."

Official opening ceremonies for the newly established Settlement Investment Corporation launched its commencement of business on Monday, October 27 in Edmonton.

The new corporation is funded by the Native Economic Development Program (NEDP) and is wholly owned by its parent company, Settlement Sooniyaw Corporation. Settlement Sooniyaw Corporation is responsible for the economic development and training for the eight Metis settlements in Alberta..

Do you keep a poster-size picture of the current minister of Indian Affairs in your bathroom so when you have a few minutes for a good think you can remember to be grateful and everything? Do you pass non-Natives on the street and smile at them knowing they share with you what they like to call 'special status,' too? Nah, me neither?

We need them alright, but it seems in Indian Country , whenever we find one we ourselves drag the winner down. Notice all the we's?

I don't know what it is, but it seems that we can't stand to see one of our own climb up the ladder to success or even to shine a little while volunteering his or her services to a sport, function or business.
