Page 9

Pam Vargas Solis, 38, is back in school after a 20 year break, but the mother of two from the Red Pheasant First Nation in Saskatchewan didn't go back for 'readin', writin' and 'rithmatic. She went back for her own special three "R's." Vargas Solis is back at school for Recognition, Responsibility and Recipes.

At the Voice of the North Aboriginal talent showcase in Prince Albert, Ray Villebrun touched the hearts of his audience with his original song. It was a message from the heart to his wife Crystal Tootoosis.

"I wrote When You're Not Here for my wife," he said. "I was just letting her know it's not all roses on the road when you're not with your family. We have five children, ranging in age from eight to 22."

Day Star artist paints himself a colorful future

Many of Clarence Kapay's paintings are so unique in style, the Saskatchewan artist has given them a name of their own - semi-abstraction.

His uniquely-styled paintings are done in a two-stage process. First, paint is carefully splattered onto the blank canvas. Once the paint has dried, Kapay paints new images from within the splatter. One of his best and most captivating pieces is of a wolf head growing out of the splattered canvas. The result is immediately eye-catching.

Something about my art

It's been a while now that I have been writing this column. Every month I choose a photograph and write about it. I feel fortunate because lately a lot of people have been telling me to talk a little bit more about me and what my art means to me. I am a pretty quiet guy, and it still surprises me that I am writing this column. Usually, I let my pictures talk for me. The main message I want to share with the people is to be proud of who they are.
