Justice inquiry findings may be put on video

The findings of the Manitoba aboriginal justice inquiry may be produced on video to make them more accessible to the province's aboriginal population.

The idea is to distribute the findings to a large audience, according to an inquiry official.

Several Native organizations have favored the idea though Phil Fontaine, the head of the Manitoba Assembly of Chiefs, wasn't sure the video report was the best way to release the findings.

The report is due this spring.

Community health nurse Cheryl Brace-Beaudry, who has been traveling regularly to the settlement in the fight against the outbreak, said the settlement accounts for two-thirds of the recent cases in her area.

The outbreak started about mid-November. Coming as it did so near Christmas was untimely since the increased visiting associated with the season aided the spread of the disease.

Canada is not fulfilling its part of the1982 constitutional patriation bargain with the Crown where Natives are concerned, a British lord said.

Ottawa has reneged on issues such as self-government and treaty rights, said Lord Michael Morris of the British House of Lords.

"I'm very concerned that our understanding in 1982, in regards to changes in the Canada Bill is not being implemented with a will that we were assured of at the time,"he said.

Government's view overly optimistic

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs has denounced an information package released by teh Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.

The department's Demographic Improvements in Reserve Life is full of incorrect information, ssaid asssembly Grand Chief Phil Fontaine.

"The package presents a disfigured view of life on reserves and urbann ghettos in Canada and Manitoba," he said. "This is a classic case of statistical manipulation by a federal cabinet minister trying to justify the existence of a redundant bureacracy."
