Unity '99 was more than just another conference

Unity '99 may have officially started on July 7, but for a group of about 40 people, it actually started a few nights earlier.

In Regina. On a bus.

Shannon Avison, the Indian Communication Arts (INCA) program director at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC) in Regina, organized the bus trip to Seattle. Thanks to her, students in the INCA Summer Institute program, some journalism instructors and some working journalists were on their way to the largest gathering of journalists ever: Unity '99.

Students from all the schools within the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) spent four days showing off their artistic talents when the PAGC held its tenth annual Fine Arts Festival April 30 to May 3.

Students participated in many different areas of the arts during the festival, ranging from visual arts to creative writing to performing arts.

"A lot of the events that they had when they first started it are some of the same events that they have now, like the dancing competitions," said festival director Shona Stapleton.

People from across the country will gather on June 21 to mark National Aboriginal Day, proclaimed in 1996 by former governor general Romeo LeBlanc to celebrate the contributions made by Aboriginal people to Canadian society, and to recognize the different cultures of Aboriginal people across Canada.

June 21 was chosen as the date for National Aboriginal Day to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, a time already celebrated by many Aboriginal people.

Each year, communities across Saskatchewan set June 21 aside for celebrating the contributions, traditions and culture of Aboriginal people. These are just some of the events being planned to celebrate National Aboriginal Day (NAD) in Saskatchewan this year.

In Regina, NAD celebrations are being held at the same time as Urban Treaty Days. NAD events will take place June 21, while Urban Treaty Days go June 20 and 21. The celebrations will be held in Wascana Park.
