The newly built health centre that forms an integral part of the Morning Sky Health and Wellness Centre on Frog Lake First Nation is designed with present and future health care needs of the reserve's 2,000 residents in mind.

The brand new health facility was joined to an existing wellness centre at the north end of the reserve, to provide people with an impressive and extensive range of health services and wellness programs under one roof.

Deadline for scholarship looms

The deadline is fast approaching for Aboriginal students wanting to apply for the Alberta Blue Cross 50th Anniversary Scholarships for Aboriginal Students. The closing date is June 1.

This is the second year the scholarships will be awarded. Two go to Aboriginal students each year, with the amount varying depending on the size of the institution the applicant will be attending. The scholarship ranges from $375 to $1,250.

Improvements to Aboriginal programming are underway within Edmonton Catholic schools, as staff begin implementing recommendations coming from a recent three-month review.

The report, "Edmonton Catholic Schools: Review of Aboriginal Programming At The Secondary Level" was completed in January.

It was conducted "to determine programming strengths, needs, and future options" for Aboriginal students within the Edmonton Catholic school system.

It's the "biggest national gathering of white ideas around stewardship ever," is how one organizer describes a gathering of land trusts representatives who will meet at the University of Guelph in June to discuss protecting species at risk. Even so, an Elder from Six Nations in Ontario, a representative of the Haida Gwaii Marine Resources Group, a member of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board in Iqaluit and a couple more Native people are on the roster of presenters, and there is an effort now by the hosting university to draw in more.
