About 170 teachers, teacher aides and tutors from First Nations schools across Saskatchewan gathered in Saskatoon Jan. 25 and 26 to take part in a special education conference organized by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN).

At the ripe old age of four, Robbie Boisson took the first step to becoming a hockey player. Today, at 22, that path he started down so many years ago has led him to the hallowed halls of the University of Saskatchewan, where he is now playing his second season with the men's varsity hockey team, the Huskies.

"I'm a checking forward," says the feisty, 5'8" Boisson.

"My role is to go out and work as hard as I can and check the other lines and try and keep the other guys off the scoreboard."

She doesn't see her job as window dressing.

As one of two Aboriginal liaisons in Lloydminster's Catholic school system, Teresa Rowland's primary job is to create a buffer zone, a safe place for Cree and Metis students in the cultural minefield of a preeminently white, urban society.

It is a job in which a little empathy goes a long way.

"The Cree and Metis families see me primarily as a comfort zone, someone who will listen, translate and most important, who won't get it wrong," said Rowland.

Aboriginal financial managers now have until Dec. 31, 2001 to take advantage of a special arrangement that allows them to have their work history taken into account to gain professional designation.

So many people are looking to secure designation as a certified Aboriginal financial manager (CAFM) that the organization that grants that certification - Aboriginal Financial Officers Association Canada (AFOA Canada) - has added more time to a grand-father clause that means qualified financial managers can get credit for work experience.
