If you'd told Clarence Pine a decade ago that he was going to be a literacy role model, he probably wouldn't have believed you. But that is exactly what the 45-year-old student and father has become.

Pine is one of this year's recipients of a Canada Post Literacy Award, receiving the award for individual achievement in Saskatchewan.

Pine is originally from Serpent River, Ont. but has been living in Saskatchewan for several years.

McNally Robinson Booksellers and the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company (SNTC) are teaming up once again to present the Anskohk Aboriginal Literature Festival.

This is the second year for the festival, a celebration of Aboriginal books and authors from across the country. This year's festival will be held Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. Some events will take place at the SNTC, located at 228-20th St. W., while others will take place at McNally Robinson Booksellers at 3130 - 8th St. E.

The truth about Tapwe is that it seeks to both provoke and entertain.

Tapwe is the Cree word for truth.

Tapwe is also a book comprised of selected columns by writer and film-maker Doug Cuthand.

Cuthand said he put the book together because people told him he should write a book.

Cuthand has worked as a columnist since 1991, writing for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, the Regina Leader-Post and the Winnipeg Free Press. It was from these columns that Cuthand drew the content of Tawpe.

Gary Merasty, grand chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), said he won't be seeking re-election at the upcoming annual assembly.

Merasty, who has served as PAGC grand chief for six years, announced on Aug. 31 that he won't be running in the Oct. 16 election.

A member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, Merasty has spearheaded a number of education and economic development initiatives during his two terms as head of the PAGC.
