Local Metis, veterans and officials proudly came to the Louis Riel commemoration ceremony at the Alberta Legislature building Nov. 16. This year the ceremony was held inside.
Now, 116 years after Riel's execution, Metis people still remember him.
"We will go on remembering and being thankful that Riel had a vision and a belief in our nation, one that Metis leaders and citizens will carry on," said Audrey Poitras, president of the Metis Nation of Alberta.
" The legacy of Metis leaders across Canada will continue to build a strong nation," added Sheila Genaille, president of the Metis National Council of Women. "The Metis way of life began centuries ago on the western plains. The landscape has changed and the Metis have changed, but our culture remains strong and vibrant," she said.
Louis Riel left an indelible imprint on the history of Canada, said Raj Pannu, leader of the provincial NDP. City councillor Michael Phair said Edmonton is pleased to remember Riel and to applaud the Metis Nation for having the entire Metis week. "All Edmontonians can appreciate and be part of the celebration," he said.
