Three of the 10 most recent recipients of the RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program are attending post-secondary schools in Alberta. Receiving $4,000 annually for a maximum of four years will be Katrina Hewton-Backfat of Siksika Nation, who is getting her Bachelor of Arts, Psychology at Athabasca University; Tyler Markowski, Métis from Morinville, who is attending the University of Alberta in Chemical Engineering; and Toni Warrior, of the Piikani Nation, who is also at the U of A with a major in Math and minor in Physical Education. Scholarships offset the costs of post-secondary tuition, textbooks, supplies and living expenses during the academic year. Since the RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program was launched in 1992, over $1.3 million has been awarded to 128 First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth across Canada pursuing post-secondary education.
