Province pitches plan for holding new Metis election

It looks like a new election for the embattled Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MNS) might be just over the horizon.

The government of Saskatchewan has come up with a proposal for holding a new election that would respect the Metis organization's procedures for calling and holding elections while allowing the province to oversee the process to ensure problems that arose during the last election don't occur again.

Documentary film-maker Tasha Hubbard will receive the prestigious Canada Award at the 2005 Geminis for her film Two Worlds Colliding, the National Film Board (NFB) has announced.

The Canada Award, created and sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage, is given for excellence in mainstream television programming that reflects the racial and cultural diversity of Canada. Hubbard and the NFB will receive the award on Nov. 17.

The Saskatchewan attorney general's application to have the case against Dean Edmondson reviewed by the Supreme Court of Canada has been dismissed.

Edmondson was one of three men charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old Cree girl in 2001. The men were accused of picking the girl up one evening, providing her with alcohol and then sexually assaulting her.

Edmondson was found guilty at his trial in May 2003 and received a conditional sentence of two-years-less-a-day, to be served in the community.
