The young, and the young at heart, gathered at the Amiskwaciy Academy on Oct. 28 for an evening of music, dance and comedy. The night's entertainment, including a silent auction, was a fundraising effort designed to support the Native Seniors Centre.

Funds raised at the event will go towards 20th anniversary celebrations planned for October 2006.

"We are fundraising to celebrate our beginning," said John MacDonald, the secretary of the drop-in centre.

Belgium plans Decoteau run

When the story of Alex Decoteau was told during a service at the Passchendaele Memorial in Belgium on Nov. 1, one Belgian citizen in the audience already knew it well.

Erwin Ureel-Vanhaverbeke, a soldier in the Belgian army who has an interest in the military history of his country, plans to organize an event to honor Decoteau, beginning in 2007.

Irene Khan has helped to bring the issues of Aboriginal women in Canada to the international stage. Khan is the Secretary General of Amnesty International and has been a human rights activist since 1977.

On Oct. 26 in Edmonton Khan was given the Social Justice Award by the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women (IAAW) with the support of the Canadian Native Friendship Centre.

The IAAW is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and improvement of Aboriginal women.

The Gathering of Elders 3rd National Aboriginal Symposium on Aging held Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 brought seniors from across Canada together to discuss shared concerns and to share diverse knowledge.

The symposium dealt with a wide variety of issues, including the retention of culture and values, health and housing problems, urban programs, traditional medicines and wellness and support.
