If you are an Aboriginal organization or entrepreneur looking for new ways to expand or learn about new funding opportunities, the Alberta Native Friendship Centre Association has a conference for you.

The Sixth Bi-Annual Funding & Information Conference will be held Feb. 16 to19, 2005 in Edmonton. Janet Morin, conference co-ordinator, said that the conference will "be like a sharing of information so everybody can get the information and find funding opportunities that they might not have been aware of.

Grant MacEwan College's annual Dreamcatcher youth conference is scheduled for Oct. 15 to 17 with some exciting educational workshops planned for the more than 1,800 young people who will attend.

Concert helps raise profile of homelessness issues

A number of Edmonton's most well-known folk musicians will be performing Nov. 14 at a benefit concert designed to raise awareness about homelessness.

Proceeds from Homefest 2004 will go to help a variety of homeless-related programs. Scheduled performers include Karla Anderson, Chris Smith, Dennis Lakusta and Zoe Lewies.

Jim Gurnett, chair of the Homefest organizing committee, said "it's a chance to meet lots of great people that have been supportive of these things."

Last year's concert raised $6,000.

Another step for casino

A multi-million dollar casino project is another step closer to construction for Tsuu T'ina located near Calgary. The nation submitted a detailed proposal and business plan to Alberta Gaming where an internal team will evaluate it. That evaluation is expected to include a review of the management team leading the project, parking and traffic. If the casino project is approved it would include not only a gambling facility but shopping, entertainment and tourism facilities as well. I could eventually employ upwards of 20,000.

Christian comic headlines benefit for Mustard Seed

It will be an evening of laughter as funnyman Brad Stine brings his comedic commentary to Edmonton for the Mustard Seed Benefit Comedy on Sept. 24 at the Winspear.

The Mustard Seed church is dedicated to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of people in Edmonton's inner city. The benefit is being organized by the Friends of the Mustard Seed. Proceeds will go to help pay for some of their activities to help the poor of the area, including evening meals, Thanksgiving dinner and a food bank.

Friends say goodbye to Harry Daniels

On Sept. 6, Harry W. Daniels passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Daniels was many things to many people-an actor, a storyteller, a teacher, an author, and a politician on both the national and international stage. But the one thing he is most closely associated with, and the accomplishment long-time friend Tony Belcourt believes Daniels was most proud of, was his work to have the Metis people of Canada recognized in the Constitution.

Journey continues to heal school trauma

The final gathering in a series of four designed to help residential school survivors heal from the trauma they experienced while attending Edmonton residential school was held Labour Day weekend on the site of the old school.

Hosted by Poundmaker's Lodge Treatment Centres and the Nechi Training, Research and Health Promotion Institute, this year's theme was Continuing Our Healing Journey.
