The Bonaparte Bruins edged the Prince George Lumber Kings 8-7 in the championship final of the inaugural All-Native Nk'maplqs Hockey Challenge Cup.

For their efforts, the Bruins' players split a total of $1,700 in cash and prizes. The Lumber Kings took home $1,200 in cash and prizes.

The Williams Lake Longhorns took third place and $700 in cash and prizes.

Organizers are content with the modest success of the first All Native hockey tournament staged in Vernon in more than 30 years.

"In the end they were cheering for us," said Fred George, manager of the Cowichan Eagles who won the final of the Dynamic Euro Cup futsal tournament in Hassett, Belgium on March 27.

Futsal is essentially indoor soccer played on a hard court that is similar in size to a basketball court. The Eagles defeated Tranmere Victoria from Liverpool, England 2-0 in the final of a tournament that featured 24 teams from 12 countries from across Europe. Tranmere Victoria is the top futsal team in England.

That's what Maxwell Smart would have said about Prince Rupert's efforts to sweep British Columbia's Junior All Native Basketball Championships held at the Caledonia High School gym in Terrace during Spring Break.

A last-second three-point shot by the Prince Rupert Friendship House Cubs' Derrick Reece rattled off the rim three times before failing to drop in, allowing the rival Skidegate Saints to escape with a 66-64 victory in the boys' final.

A pair of familiar faces have been honored as British Columbia's top Aboriginal athletes for their performances in 2004.

For the second straight year, Lara Mussell, an ultimate Frisbee star, has captured the Tom Longboat Award as the province's top female Aboriginal athlete.

And Richard Peter, a wheelchair basketball player, has been named B.C.'s top male Aboriginal athlete.

Peter had previously won the regional award in 2000. That year he was also named as the country's top male Aboriginal athlete.

William Matthews, his voice cracking and fighting back tears, has to stop to compose himself. Even decades later, it is difficult for him to discuss his experiences in residential school.
