There was a mighty clap of thunder and a brilliant flash of lightning over Saskatoon on March 31 when the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation flew into town on the wings of a thunderbird to host its 12th annual achievement awards gala.

The gala celebrates the lives of 14 recipients from the Aboriginal community with a lavish stage show complete with performances by some of the hottest talent on the Aboriginal musical and artistic scenes today.

The delegation from the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MNS) that attended the 20th general assembly of the Metis National Council (MNC) in Calgary March 19 and 20 was looking for financial and moral support from the national organization. They received the latter, but on two separate occasions the provincial organization's call for financial assistance from the MNC was rejected.

Both Saskatchewan entries returned home with some hardware from this year's National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC).

The fourth annual national tournament was staged April 17 to 23 in Miramichi, N.B., with the Saskatchewan girls' and boys' clubs each winning bronze medals in their divisions. A total of 18 clubs-nine female and nine male-participated at this year's tournament.

The Saskatchewan girls' squad had placed fourth at the 2004 national staged in Prince George, B.C.

A track and field competitor who has excelled at various competitions and a star volleyball player have been honoured as Saskatchewan's top Aboriginal athletes for 2004.

Charmane Naytowhow and Alwyn Piche were chosen as regional winners of the Tom Longboat Award.

"There was a number of quality athletes that were nominated," said Shirley MacDonald, the director of Sports, Culture, Youth and Recreation for the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

The Saskatoon Police Service is trying to encourage more First Nation and Metis people to consider careers in policing, and has turned to someone who knows the local Aboriginal community well to help in those efforts.

Const. Craig Nyirfa has served as the police service's Aboriginal liaison officer for more than 10 years, during which time he has earned the respect of the Aboriginal community with his many positive initiatives. In January, he was seconded to the police service's recruitment section to lend a hand.
