Page 9

British Columbia's entrants in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) held April 17 to 23 in Miramichi, N.B., once again struggled.

B.C. was represented in both the girls' and boys' divisions at the nationals, but neither side managed to register a victory.

The lone bright spot was for the female club which managed a tie in one of its four games. As for the B.C. male team, it lost all six of its matches.

The unveiling on April 23 of the official logo of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games at Whistler, B.C. has upset many of the province's First Nations people. The logo chosen is an inuksuk, which is an Inuit symbol specifically known as "ilanaaq," meaning "friend" in the Inuit language.

An official press release states that the figure represents the deep connection between Canadians and their breathtaking natural environment, with its arms reaching for the sky and uplifting souls. It is a friend who will help Canadians greet the world in 2010.

Hard work and dedication is what it takes to land a summer internship at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

At least that's what it took for Malaspina First Nation student Rose Alexis.

Alexis learned about the student opportunities offered at the Smithsonian through a conversation while completing a one-year internship at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que. She then applied for the summer position with the Smithsonian and gratefully accepted a 10-week internship that will commence June 6.
