Soon a computer with Internet access will be all a person living in a remote community will need to receive industry-recognized information technology training, thanks to the First Nations Distance Learning Program.

The program is being developed by Cisco Systems Canada, a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, in partnership with Industry Canada, Human Resources Skills Development Canada and the First Nations SchoolNet regional management organizations (RMOs).

The city of Edmonton will be bustling with celebrations for Alberta's 100th anniversary during the May long weekend. Not only will the Queen will be in town, but so will Aboriginal artists and artisans.

Martha Campiou, the co-ordinator of the Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Centennial Festival, says everyone is invited to partake. The event is free and celebrates Aboriginal culture and Native achievement in Edmonton over the past 100 years. Activities will take place at Sir Winston Churchill Square on May 23.

Emergency call from reserve goes unanswered

A frantic phone call for help to 911 emergency services from the Enoch First Nation went unanswered for 10 minutes or more as a man was trapped under his car, injured in an automotive repair accident.

On April 10 at 10 a.m., Wayne Courtepatte was working on his car, which was up on blocks while he changed the brakes. While Courtepatte was underneath the car, it slipped off the blocks, trapping his head under the bumper. Courtepatte was unable to free himself and called out for help to the house where his mother Tilly, one of her friends and his cousin were inside.

A consortium of four oil companies obtained from the province the mineral rights to an area near Sawn Lake, which is near a Lubicon reserve and considered by the Lubicon people to be part of their traditional territory.

Bittersweet mood at veterans' ceremony

Chuck Knutson wasn't among the veterans assembled at the dedication ceremony in front of the provincial legislature on April 30.

The 73-year-old Korean War veteran had passed away earlier that morning, bringing a touch of sadness to an otherwise happy occasion.

Beside the flags of Canada, Alberta and the Aboriginal Veterans Society of Alberta was a single yellow rose planted in his honor. The occasion was the installation of a plaque on the legislature grounds honoring Aboriginal veterans.

Pope worked to build special relationship with Aboriginal people

When Pope John Paul II passed away on April 2, people from around the world, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, joined in mourning and in prayer. He had travelled far and wide during his 26-year papacy, touching many. He visited more than 120 countries, and was the first pope ever to visit Canada, even though the presence of the Catholic church in this country predates confederation.
