NAIT celebrates student success

On April 12, the NAIT Aboriginal Student Association held a cultural celebration to applaud the work being done to ensure the success of Aboriginal students at the school.

The celebration was presided over by Conrad Young, president of the association. It featured a tribute and gifts to honor Elders Walter Bonaise, Marge Freidel, Willy Blake, and the late Lorraine Sinclair, who have been integral to helping young people at NAIT. The event also featured cultural displays such as flute, drumming and dancing.

Aboriginal students at NorQuest College have a new and improved ceremonial room to gather for counselling, prayer and traditional ceremonies.

The old smudging room at the college was badly in need of upgrading. Artist Karen Arnett assembled a team of NorQuest students, and with a $10,000 donation from ATCO Gas, they transformed the old smudging room into the Aboriginal Ceremonial Room, which was officially opened April 19.

Donna Brule knew from the look on the young mother's face that she had made an impact, and in that moment the young nurse knew the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of others and she embraced her role in the community as caregiver.

Brule had just graduated from the University of Alberta with a nursing degree and was conducting a home visit with the new mom.

Colton Yellow Horn did eventually get his medal from his inaugural international hockey tournament, but not in the way he would have preferred.

Yellow Horn was not around for the medal ceremonies of the world under-18 hockey championships held in the Czech Republic. Yellowhorn, a member of the Canadian squad, was the victim of a dirty hit late in a contest in the gold-medal game held April 24 between Canada and the United States.

Alberta's representatives did not fare as well as they had hoped to at this year's National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC).

The Canadian tournament was staged April 17 to 23 in Miramichi, N.B. Alberta's female side did not receive a final ranking. It was eliminated following its 7-1 quarter-final loss against Ontario South.

As for the Alberta male squad, it ended up in seventh place after winning its final contest 8-5 over British Columbia.

Soon a computer with Internet access will be all a person living in a remote community will need to receive industry-recognized information technology training, thanks to the First Nations Distance Learning Program.

The program is being developed by Cisco Systems Canada, a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, in partnership with Industry Canada, Human Resources Skills Development Canada and the First Nations SchoolNet regional management organizations (RMOs).
